25TH BIRTHDAY FESTIVAL WEEK 2010

The week of 16 through 22 August 2010 was WYA's 25th Birthday Festival Week.

EmanatE DANCE PROGRAMME

New dance by ex-members of WYA and also present members of WYDmoves, led by Trish Murphy. The well-received 30-minute show was presented 20 and 21 August at Garter Lane.

ART & ARCHIVE EXHIBITION

The Art and Archive exhibition opened in Greyfriars Tuesday 17 August and also exhibited at Waterford Central Library. This exhibition ran until Sat. 28th August and included art inspired by the archival material from WYA over the last 25 years collated by Kate McCarthy and Martin Kennedy. It included drawings, paintings and video by over thirty artists including Paddy Dwan, Anthony Mackey, Alan Ruane, Tom Casey, Eric Flavin, Robert Jackson, Carol Yelverton, Margaret O'Brien Moran, Roisin Kinsella, Clare Scott, Sam Jacob, Gerry Keane, Sue Burkitt, Linda Kavanagh, Geraldine Stafford, Niall Larkin, Jill Bouchier, Anne Genevieve Hanway, Ben Hennessy, Cormac Leane, Katie Bradley, Nick Kavanagh, Martin Kennedy, Berna Lawton, Rosie Dulson, Myra Dulson, Ger Kennedy, John Cullinan, Eileen Kennedy, John O’Connell, David Brazil, Bernie Laherty, John Gallagher, Michael Durand, Jane O’Brien Moran and Suzanne Irish. John O'Regan launched the exhibition.

WYD-Eye FILM NIGHT

On Wednesday 18 August WYD-Eye Film Unit presented a film night at the Granary Theatre. The presentation mixed new work with a selection of films made by young people over the last ten years.

CHILDREN'S ART WORKSHOP

On Friday 21 August Jill Bouchier conducted an art class for children aged 6-12 at Greyfriars Gallery exploring Art and Archive.

JIM DALY BOOK LAUNCH

'Jim Daly, Collected Works' anthology of  poetry, prose and plays by Jim Daly, edited by Robert Browne, Mark Roper and Jim Nolan. Launched at Greyfriars Gallery Friday 20 August. Available at the Book Centre in Waterford for €10.

TANGLED UP IN WORDS

This was a poetry and prose exhibition facilitated by Eimear Cheasty mounted on Waterford shop windows. Young people aged 13-19 each created a new work of poetry or prose which explored the theme of "Belonging". On Saturday 21 August the young writers gave a public reading at the Central Library.

GRAFITTI WALLS FOR WATERFORD

On Saturday 21 August Waterford’s Graffiti Wall was launched at Wyse Park, New Street. Young spray artists with Free Runners and DJs gave the new graffiti wall a good splash of colour. A few guest graffiti artists from out of town also showed up.

 

THEATRE IN THE GRANARY & IN THE STREETS

On Friday 20 August and Saturday 21 August WYA presented a variety of innovative theatre pieces. Wandering street theatre actors directed by Nick Kavanagh roamed the City Centre. In the Granary Theatre, there was lunchtime theatre by ex-members of WYA (including a Flann O’Brien piece directed by Joe Meagher). Later in the afternoon Members of WYA conducted a rehearsed reading of 'Snap'd' by Jim Daly. Then on Friday night, 'Bag of Trees' Theatre Company presented a fun improv theatre session.

LARK IN THE PARK

On Sunday 22 August WYA presented a day of music in the Peoples Park with 12 local bands and musicians who all had an association with WYA. The afternoon was a family-friendly picnic day in the park. Among the acts performing were: Interplanetary Experience, Relic, Herecy, Kytte, Dirty ten to one, Siam Collective, Brendan Maher, Deaf Joe, Propellar Palms, Butterfly Band, Fighting Spiders, Solar Taxi and DJ Louis.
